Jan Albers
OranGeGlOw, 2020

The work OranGeGlOw, created especially for the Galerie der Gegenwart, hovers above the floor like a ragged colossus. The work, which seems to weigh tons, on closer inspection turns out to be incredibly lightweight. The initial material is polystyrene, a Styrofoam that the artist has subjected to a transformation process. Jan Albers punches, carves and saws into the material, leaving deep gouges and protrusions, while regular horizontal and vertical cuts with a chainsaw create a calm, grid-like structure. This surface is further dissolved in places through chemical etching with acetone. Albers' pictorial sculptures are constantly on the cusp of destruction and repair, of chaos and order – contradictions that are an essential part of the artist’s world.
