Die im März 1979 erschienene Sondernummer von VTRE ist die einzige Ausgabe einer von Maciunas noch geplanten, von ihm aber nicht mehr realisierten Zeitung. Das vom Fluxus-Herausgeberkomitee publizierte Extrablatt enthält den Nachruf auf George Maciunas und ist zugleich Hommage an den im Dezember des Vorjahres verstorbenen Begründer der Fluxus -Bewegung. In Bild und Text wird ein Überblick über Leben und Wirken des Künstlers gegeben, jedoch ohne Garantie auf Authentizität. So wird etwa Maciunas Tod im Stile eines Boulevardblatts als Folge eines Raubüberfalls geschildert, was in keiner Weise mit den tatsächlichen Gegebenheiten übereinstimmt. Die zu seitenfüllenden Tableaus arrangierten Fotografien hingegen bilden Happenings und Ereignisse aus Maciunas Leben ab. Doch wird gerade die Durchmischung von Fiktivem und Tatsächlichem der schillernden Persönlichkeit des Künstlers gerecht, die sich immer wieder neue Ausdrucksformen suchte: Mal trat er im päpstlichen Ornat als oberster Anwalt der Fluxus-Bewegung, mal als Kellnerin in einem Lokal und bei der eigenen Hochzeit als Braut auf. Diese Zusammenstellung lässt ebenfalls ahnen, in welcher Weise die Zeitung die Fluxus-Bewegung hätte repräsentieren können.

The special edition of VTRE published in March 1979 is the only issue of a newspaper George Maciunas had planned but never ended up realising. It was brought out by the Fluxus Publishing Company and contains an obituary for Maciunas while also paying tribute to the founder of the Fluxus movement, who had died in December of the previous year. Images and texts provide an overview of the artist’s life and work but make no guarantee of authenticity. Maciunas’s death is thus portrayed in tabloid style as the result of a robbery, which by no means corresponds with the facts. By contrast, photographs arranged as page-filling tableaux depict real happenings and events from the artist’s life. This very mix of fact and fiction provides an ideal way to do justice to this colourful figure, who continually sought new forms of expression. Sometimes Maciunas appeared in papal regalia as the senior counsel for the Fluxus movement, at other times as a waitress in a restaurant, and once as the bride at his own wedding celebration. From this litany of antics, it is easy to imagine how the newspaper might have represented the Fluxus movement.
