Carl Christian Heerup, Konsul, Kaufmann, kam 1859 nach Hamburg. In den 1860er Jahren begann er zu sammeln und vermachte seine Sammlung von 40 Gemälden der Hamburger Kunsthalle 1894, darunter fünf Werke von Max Liebermann.

Alfred Lichtwark, Direktor der Kunsthalle von 1886 - 1914, stellte das Vermächtnis unmittelbar nach Erhalt im nordöstlichen Saal des Gründungsbau der Hamburger Kunsthalle aus. Siehe Alfred Lichtwark, Jahresbericht der Kunsthalle zu Hamburg, 1894 (1895), S. 7-9.

Sp. 17 – 22 (https://doi.org/10.11588/diglit.5774.6). Hier heißt es u.a. auf S. 22: „Dem Hamburger Museumsdirektor kommt das Verdienst zu, diese Werke der Kunsthalle zugeführt und als vollständiges Ganzes erhalten zu haben. Sie wären sonst vermutlich, wie der Besitzer sich einmal wehmütig zu mir äußerte, unter den Hammer gekommen und durch die (lachenden) Erben des alten Junggesellen, der für die fehlenden Familienfreuden eine Ersatz in Kunst und Poesie gefunden hatte, in alle Winde zerstreut worden." / „Über das Wirken und streben Alfred Lichtwark’s des Hamburger Kunsthallendirektors, haben berufenere Federn – unter ihnen Richard Muther in der „Neuen Deutschen Rundschau“ – beredtes Zeugnis abgegeben, dem ich nur bescheidene Bewunderung hinzuzufügen vermag. Zu seinen „besten Thaten“ gehört auch die „Rettung“ der Heerupsammlung für die Hamburger Kunsthalle.“
Von dem Vermächtnis sind heute noch # Werke in der Sammlung der Hamburger Kunsthalle nachzuweisen. # Werke wurden zwischen # und # unter dem Direktor Gustav Pauli verkauft.
