1) Die Entstehungszeit der Skulptur wird über einen langen Zeitraum angesetzt. Den Anfangspunkt bilden Zeichnungen, die eine ähnliche Figur zeigen und um 1909 datieren. Berger / Zutter 1996, S. 214. Rewald gibt 1939 an, dass die Skulptur noch immer in Arbeit ist. Siehe John Rewald, Maillol, Paris 1939, Kat. Nr. 144.
2) Bislang unbekannte Provenienz/en. Die Kauernde soll direkt aus dem Nachlass des Künstlers stammen, der von Dina Vierny (1919 - 2009) verwaltet wurde. Ein schriftlicher Beleg hierzu liegt nicht vor. Es muss geklärt werden, ob Dina Vierny die Skulptur direkt von Maillol übernahm und dann nach Hamburg verkaufte, oder ob Zwischeneigentümer*innen nachgewiesen werden können.
3) HAHK: 32-233.7 (Slg 3) Ankäufe für die Plastik- und Med. Sammlg., 1.1.1951 – 31.12.1961. Stiftung Hamburger Kunstsammlungen, Ordner „I 1957 1956 Hamburgische Landesbank“, Handschriftliche Quittung der Galerie Dina Vierny, Paris, vom 9.7.1957.

Die Provenienz dieses Werkes konnte im Rahmen des gemeinsam von der Stiftung Hamburger Kunstsammlungen, Hamburger Kunsthalle und dem Deutschen Zentrum Kulturgutverluste, Magdeburg, finanzierten Projektes "Erforschung der Werkprovenienzen der Kunstwerke mit ungeklärter bzw. bedenklicher Herkunft im Eigentum der Stiftung Hamburger Kunstsammlungen, die sich als Dauerleihgabe in der Hamburger Kunsthalle befinden."
