Karl Horst Hödicke

Automaten, 1964

The city of Berlin is a main source of inspiration for Karl Horst Hödicke. His expressive style is characterised by impressions of the capital, its landmarks and its everyday panoramas. The picture belongs to the series of "Passages" begun in 1964, in which Hödicke projects quickly perceived fragments of the reality of the big city streets onto each other through reflection and superimposition. In the images captured, details can be discerned that refer to public transportation and to fast-food restaurants and food trucks. Through the enlargement of some details, depictions in very intense colours, and the confusingly composed scenes, daily urban life is transformed into a mysterious and threatening scenario. Hödicke's painting thus gives form to the speed and fleetingness of big city life and the demands it makes on the individual, without establishing them entirely.
