Robert Cottingham

Boulevard Drinks, 1976

Robert Cottingham’s work is a typical representation of American Hyperrealism of the 1960s and 1970s. His favourite motif, as illustrated in Boulevard Drinks (1976), is a cropped view of house walls with neon signs from a worm's-eye view. The hyper-realistic rendering captures gloss and reflections with meticulous accuracy, but shows no human life. The surfaces seem almost like mock-ups of the real world, emphasising the artificial quality of American cities of the time, dominated by advertising banners and billboards. Cottingham himself sums up his pictures as follows: "In the end, the picture seems to reflect reality. But that is a tautology. A successful painting must surpass reality. The painting itself is the new reality."
