3) Verzeichniss der Bilder der öffentlichen städtischen Gemälde-Gallerie in Hamburg, Hamburg 1850, S. 12. Das Werk gilt als sogenanntes "Stammbild der Gallerie von 1846". Friedrich Stammann stammte aus einer Hamburger Zimmermannsfamilie und erlernte dieses Handwerk von seinem Stiefvater. Im Alter von 19 Jahren schrieb er sich an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in München ein und studierte drei Jahre lang Architektur. Nach einigen Reisen durch Europa ließ er sich 1840 in seiner Geburtsstadt Hamburg nieder, wo er sich durch den hohen Bedarf an Architekten nach dem Großen Brand von 1842 gut situieren konnte. Im selben Jahr wurde er erstmals eines der Vorstandsmitglieder des Kunstvereins in Hamburg. Zusammen mit weiteren Vereinsmitgliedern verhandelte er mit dem Senat über die Errichtung einer städtischen Gemälde-Gallerie für Hamburg. Deren Grundstock er 1846 mit dem Geschenk des Gemäldes "Cromwell am Sarge Karls I.", gemeinsam mit den Gemälden fünf weiterer Schenker (Johann Christian Andreas Mestern (1799 – 1844), Johann Matthias Commeter (1791 – 1869), Otto Christian Gaedechens (1791 – 1856), and Wilhelm te Kloot (1788 – 1874) bildete. Seine Vorbildrolle als bürgerlicher Stifter machte sich bezahlt, als immer mehr Hamburger*innen ihre Sammlungen einer zu gründenden Gemälde-Gallerie vermachten. Ihr Einsatz wurde durch die Eröffnung der öffentlich städtischen Gemälde-Gallerie am 13.3.1850 belohnt.
4) Schnell wurden die Räumlichkeiten der "öffentlichen Gemälde-Gallerie" zu klein, so dass ab 1863 der Bau der Hamburger Kunsthalle an ihrem heutigen Platz angegangen wurde (Grundsteinlegung am 22.12.1863). Nachdem das fertiggestellte Gebäude am 5.12.1868 übergeben worden war, wurden im April die Kunstwerke von den Börsenarkaden in das neue Gebäude der Hamburger Kunsthalle gebracht. Die Künstler Martin Gensler (1811 – 1881) und Valentin Ruths (1825 – 1909) führen die Ersteinrichtung der Sammlung durch. Die Gemälde werden in drei Sälen und fünf kleinen Kabinetten gezeigt. Am 30.8.1869 erfolgt die feierliche Eröffnung des Museums, dessen Backstein-Architektur sich am Stil der italienischen Renaissance orientiert.
