Für die documenta 8 in Kassel entwarf Thomas Schütte 1987 einen Pavillon in Form von zwei verschieden großen, runden Gebäudeteilen, die durch einen Mittelgang miteinander verbunden waren. Die Form der runden Gebäudeteile basierte ursprünglich auf der Form umgedrehter Farbeimer. Das Gebäude wurde in der Karlsaue in Kassel errichtet und während der documenta als öffentliches Eiscafé genutzt. Schütte ging damit ironisch und kritisch auf den Eventcharakter der Großveranstaltung ein und vereinte künstlerische Formgebung mit Funktionalität. Bei dem in der Hamburger Kunsthalle befindlichen Werk handelt es sich um ein Modell dieses Pavillons, das Thomas Schütte aus Holz anfertigte. Modelle dieser Art baute Schütte seit den frühen 1980er-Jahren. Das Spiel mit Skalierung und Realisierung durchzieht sein gesamtes skulpturales Werk. Da der eigentliche Pavillon mit der documenta 8 abgebaut wurde, ist das Modell eine der wenigen plastisch und sinnlich erfahrbaren Spuren des Kunstwerkes.

For documenta 8 in Kassel in 1987, Thomas Schütte designed an outdoor pavilion in the form of two round building sections of different sizes connected by a central passageway. The shape of these round buildings was based on the shape of upturned paint buckets. The building was erected in the Karlsaue park in Kassel and was used as a public ice cream café during the run of the documenta exhibition. Schütte thus ironically and critically addressed the character of the major event and combined artistic design with functionality. The work in the Hamburg Kunsthalle is a wooden model of the ice cream pavilion. Schütte has been building models like this since the early 1980s, and his entire sculptural oeuvre plays with scale and bringing works to fruition. Since the actual pavilion was dismantled with documenta 8, the model is one of the few remaining sculptural and physical traces of the artwork.
