Thomas Schütte

United Enemies, 1993

Vereinigte Feinde

The first figurines in the United Enemies series were created during Thomas Schütte's time as a fellow at the Villa Massimo in Rome in 1992. At that time, countless politicians in Italy were exposed as being corrupt and engaging in criminal activities, numerous bribery scandals shook the country and led to the government having to resign. Schütte does not shy away from using techniques that have a reputation in contemporary art for being associated with craft. The figurines are modelled with Fimo clay and tightly wrapped in fabric. Their faces radiate distaste yet they are tied to each other and thus inseparable. In their close intertwining, they represent power-hungry people whose networks can help them rise to the top, but can also quickly bring them down in defeat.
