Die Darstellung bezieht sich auf das Altarwerk mit der Kreuzabnahme Christi Giovanni Antonio Bazzis (gen. Il Sodoma) von 1510. Dieses befand sich einst in der Chiesa di S. Francesco in Siena, heute ist es in der Pinacoteca in Siena zu finden.
