Francisco Herrera, d. Ä. ("El Viejo")

Studie eines Apostels (?), schreibend, 1630 - 1640

Antonio Martínez Ripoll considered this work a depiction of the Evangelist Matthew, comparing it with the 1589 apostle series by Hendrik Goltzius (1558-1617) primarily on the basis of its gestural nature. It does bear visible similarities to some of those apostles, which were also depicted in half figure and gestured similarly. However, given that both artists were obviously concerned with illustrating a variety of poses for the hands and heads, such similarities are entirely understandable.
