Daniel Richter
Fatifa, 2005

Daniel Richter's colourful, often fantastical paintings deal with current, sociocritical, and political themes. Fatifa is based on press photographs of Moroccan refugees on completely overcrowded rubber boats crossing the Strait of Gibraltar to reach Tarifa, Spain. Richter painted two more paintings on this subject: Tarifa (2001) and Bas (2002). In a world of information and stimulus overload, Richter selects subjects that often have timely political content. In doing so, he does not work with bold simplifications or polemics, but rather presents them for consideration. At the same time, his works challenge the fast pace of the media and news landscape and urgently plead for more awareness.
