Für die indische Fotografin Dayanita Singh steht die Frage der Präsentation ihrer Werke im Mittelpunkt. Schon früh hat sie als ideale Form der Publikation das Medium Buch entdeckt, um ihre Fotos jedermann zugänglich zu machen: „The book is at the heart of my work. […]. I don’t think an artist has to be unique. I think a mass produced book can also be an artist’s book.“ In dem Göttinger Verleger Gerhard Steidl hat sie einen kongenialen Partner gefunden, mit dem sie immer wieder neue Präsentations- und Verbreitungsformen für ihre Fotos entwickelt, etwa als gerahmte Buchseiten an der Wand, als begehbares Archiv oder als Postkarten. Das schmale Format, das Dayanita Singh für das Künstlerbuch Dream Villa wählte, entspricht ganz ihrer Vorstellung vom intimen Buchcharakter: „Wichtig ist mir an Büchern, dass sie mir erlauben, meine eigene Welt zu schaffen“. Sowohl in Dream Villa als auch in dem ein Jahr später entstandenen Blue Book nutzt sie Tageslichtfilme für Nachtaufnahmen und erhält auf diese Weise geheimnisvolle Bilder, die durch Unschärfe und unerwartete Lichtsituationen den individuellen Augenblick der einzelnen Szenen verfremden und so neue Traumwelten eröffnen.

A primary concern for the Indian photographer Dayanita Singh is the question of how best to present her works to the public. Early on she discovered the medium of the book as an ideal form in which to make her photos accessible to one and all: “The book is at the heart of my work. [...]. I don’t think an artist has to be unique. I think a mass-produced book can also be an artist’s book.” Singh found in Gerhard Steidl with his publishing house in Göttingen a congenial partner for helping her to develop ever -new ways of presenting and disseminating her photos, for example as framed book pages hanging on a wall, as a walk -through archive or as postcards. The narrow format Singh chose for her artist’s book Dream Villa embodies her notion of the intimate nature of the book: “What I value about books is that they let me create my own world.” Both in Dream Villa and in her Blue Book, published one year later, the artist uses daylight film to take night shots, resulting in enigmatic images that with their blurring and unexpected lighting alienate the moments captured in the various scenes, opening up new dream worlds.
