Francisco de Zurbarán, Umkreis
Nach links gewendeter sitzender Mann mit Buch, Frühes 17. Jahrhundert
The figure is shown kneeling and holding a book with his left hand as he seems to point out text on the page with his right. Alfonso Pérez Sánchez (Madrid 1980) suggested that this could be a study for an apostle in a Pentecost scene or an Assumption of the Virgin. No painting with an identical figure is known and, like its companions in this group, this is fundamentally a drapery study, and the model has been posed as a kneeling saint or apostle. The artist has focused on how the folds of the ample tunic or cassock arrange themselves around his knees and on the floor, as well as on the application of the diagonal hatching, pressing down on the sheet more or less with the chalk depending on the relief of the fold and whether the drapery area is in medium or full shadow. The drawing demonstrates a certain level of competence in the handling of light and shadow, but the rendition of the external contours of the form is uncertain the artist returns to them several times before fixing them, as can be seen in the profile of the shoulders, the right sleeve, and the line of the face.
