Francisco de Zurbarán, ehemals zugeschrieben
Nach links gewandter Heiliger, mit erhobener Rechter segnend, Frühes 17. Jahrhundert
The primary purpose of this drawing is the study of the form of the large cloak that envelopes the figure and the fall of light upon it. It would appear, like all the others in this group, to have been drawn from a live model. Indeed, the same model who, here, takes up the pose of a blessing saint or religious figure, seems to reappear in several other drawings, certainly in inv. nos. 38640 and 38645 (cat. nos. 179 and 181). His profile was initially drawn a little lower and to the left, but this attempt was abandoned in favor of the final, more finished, and slightly smaller head. The use of blue prepared paper in Spanish seventeenth-century drawings is uncommon.
