Gottvater mit Cherubim, 1675 - 1727

This drawing entered the Hamburger Kunsthalle with an attribution to Clemente Fernández de Torres, a painter from Cádiz. This was confirmed by August Mayer in 1918, but Jonathan Brown considered it closer to the style of Francisco de Herrera the Younger and, based on the drawing's pencil inscription (“Torres”), he proposed attributing it to Madrid artist Matías de Torres. The work's unfinished appearance suggests it was a preparatory sketch for an unidentified composition.
Clemente de Torres painted a work with the same subject matter for the keystone of an arch leading to the chancel of the Oratory of San Felipe Neri in Cádiz, which was consecrated in 1719. In that oval canvas, God the Father appears without cherubs. He offers his blessings with his right hand while holding the orb in his left
The verso of the present drawing has a sketch for the Crucifixion of Saint Andrew, which resembles a work of the same name by Juan de Roelas (ca. 1568/70-1625) at the Museo de Bellas Artes in Seville.[1]
