Amor aus dem Gemälde "Die Anbetung der Venus"

This drawing is a partial copy of one of the five paintings that Titian made for Alfonso I d'Este (1476-1534), Duke of Ferrara, for the so-called Alabaster Dressing Room at his castle.[1] Specifically, it is a copy of the Cupid at the lower part of the statue of Venus in Titian's original painting. There, he shoots a golden arrow symbolizing the continuity of the love initiated by two other Cupids throwing apples with kisses. Peter Paul Rubens also made a copy of this work, with variants, that is now at the Stockholm Nationalmuseum.
The author of the present drawing, whom José Atanasio Echeverría considered an unidentified Spaniard, had access to the Royal Collection, and also almost certainly to the so-called Titian Vaults at Madrid's Alcázar Palace, where the painting was hung shortly after its arrival in Spain in 1637. As a gift from Niccolò Ludovisi to Philip IV, Titian's canvas arrived via the Count of Monterrey. It was also reproduced in a print by Giovanni Andrea Podesta (ca. 1608-before 1674) in 1636.
The irregular cut at the top indicates that the paper originally contained a copy of a larger part of the painting, possibly the entire work.
