Der Christusknabe mit der Weltkugel, 1695 - 1758

The Christ Child in the present sheet is strongly reminiscent of the one that appears to the saint in Bartolomé Esteban Murillo's large painting Saint Anthony with the Christ in Seville's cathedral.[1] Except for the position of the head, it is virtually identical. Doubtless this drawing was also greatly influenced by Murillo's style and has accordingly been attributed to one of his “most faithful” copyists, Alonso Miguel de Tovar (see inv. no. 38611, cat. no. 162).[2]
Technically, the drawing is highly refined: in the angels-especially their faces-the pen drawing was further accented with red chalk, and the already washed shadowed areas in the angels and the clouds are emphasized with hatching in black crayon. In addition to its outline in red crayon, the washing, and the hatching in black pencil, the world sphere was further modeled with hatching pen strokes.
The similarity between this drawing and inv. no. 38611, cat. no. 162, and the works mentioned there for comparison makes an attribution to Tovar seem plausible.

2. In one of the conversations I was able to have with him in May 2012, Enrique Valdivieso considered as a possible author of this drawing Cornelis Schut III, who also frequently worked as a Murillo copyist. I am sincerely grateful to him.
